Beauty in Black… or Beauty in BASIC? Who Wrote This Dialogue?! 😭
Let’s go ahead and say what everybody at home is already thinking but might be scared to type in the comments…
WHO. WROTE. THIS. DIALOGUE?!
Because baby… the way these lines are coming out on Beauty in Black, you would think somebody wrote this script on a lunch break, half asleep, with autocorrect turned OFF.
And I’m not even trying to be shady… okay yes I am—but it’s coming from a place of love AND confusion.
Because the show itself? The concept? The drama? The visuals?
It had potential. REAL potential.
But then the characters open their mouths… and suddenly it’s giving “after-school play rehearsal” instead of prime-time drama.
The Dialogue Is Fighting for Its Life 😩
Let’s start here.
You ever watch a scene and think,
“Why are they talking like that?”
Not in a good way. Not in a poetic way.
In a “this doesn’t sound like real people” kind of way.
Because the lines on this show be like:
“You hurt me. And I don’t like being hurt.”
“I trusted you. Trust is very important to me.”
“This situation is not what I expected.”
Sir… MA’AM…
WHO TALKS LIKE THIS IN REAL LIFE?!
It’s giving:
No emotion
No flavor
No personality
Just… words put together like a last-minute homework assignment
And I’m sitting there like…
Even a 5th grader would’ve added some spice.
Where Is the Emotion?!
Now let’s talk about delivery.
Because even if the lines are a little… questionable… a strong actor can SAVE a scene.
But here? The actors look like they’re trying to understand the script WHILE saying it.
You can literally see it in their faces:
“Wait… what am I supposed to feel right now?”
There’s no build-up. No tension. No real emotion.
Somebody will be in a serious argument and say something like:
“I am upset with your actions.”
UPSET?! That’s it?!
This is supposed to be drama, not a school report on behavior.
Where is the:
yelling
crying
cutting remarks
messy one-liners
Because right now… it’s giving HR meeting, not reality drama.
The Scenes Feel… Flat
You ever watch a scene and it just sits there?
That’s what’s happening here.
The conversations don’t flow. They don’t build. They don’t go anywhere.
It’s like:
Person A says a basic line
Person B responds with another basic line
And then… the scene just ends
No twist. No gag. No moment.
And I’m sitting there like:
“Wait… that’s it?”
Where is the moment that makes me pause the TV and say:
“OH WOW. Now THAT was messy.”
Because right now?
It’s giving:
“Okay… next scene please.”
Did ChatGPT Write This? (Because If So… Let Me Log In 😭)
Now let’s address the elephant in the room.
People keep joking:
“This gotta be ChatGPT writing this show.”
And let me just say…
Don’t blame ChatGPT for this.
Because even AI would’ve added:
a little sass
a little drama
a little “wait… did they just say that?!”
This feels more like:
“Write a dramatic scene.”
Copy. Paste. Submit.
No edits. No personality. No flavor.
And I KNOW for a fact if you gave a 5th grader this assignment:
“Write a dramatic argument scene”
They would’ve came back with:
Somebody getting read for filth
Somebody storming out the room
Somebody yelling “YOU LIED!”
At least it would’ve been entertaining!
The Characters Deserve Better
And this is the part that actually makes me a little mad.
Because the characters themselves?
They could be GOOD.
You can tell there’s supposed to be:
deep backstories
complicated relationships
emotional tension
But the writing is holding them back.
It’s like giving a singer a beautiful voice…
and then handing them a song with NO melody.
They can only do so much.
And you can see the actors trying.
You really can.
But the script is not giving them anything to work with.
Let’s Talk About Missed Opportunities 👀
There were so many moments where the show could’ve gone ALL THE WAY THERE.
Moments that should’ve been:
explosive
emotional
unforgettable
But instead… they just… happened.
No punch. No impact. No replay value.
And I’m like:
“Why didn’t y’all push it further?!”
Because if you’re going to give us drama…
Give us:
betrayal
secrets
messy confrontations
ICONIC lines
Not:
“I am disappointed in your decision.”
That line should be ILLEGAL in a drama series.
It’s Giving… First Draft Energy
Let me be honest.
This whole show feels like: a first draft that never got revised.
And that’s the real issue.
Because writing is rewriting.
You gotta:
punch up the dialogue
add personality
make each character sound DIFFERENT
Right now? Everybody sounds the same.
And that’s why it feels so flat.
How They Could Fix It (Because It’s Not Too Late 👀)
Now I’m not just here to complain. I’m here with solutions.
Because this show could STILL be saved.
Here’s what needs to happen:
1. Bring in a Dialogue Doctor
Somebody who knows how people ACTUALLY talk.
Not textbook talking. Not polite talking.
Real, messy, emotional talking.
2. Let the Actors Improvise
Because honestly?
Some of the best lines in TV history were NOT in the script.
Let the actors:
add their own flavor
react naturally
break away from stiff lines
3. Add Conflict With Teeth
Not soft arguments.
We need:
tension
stakes
consequences
Make the audience feel something.
4. Give Us MEMORABLE LINES
Every good show has quotes people repeat.
Right now?
I can’t remember ONE line from this show.
And that’s a problem.
Final Thoughts: Beauty in Black Needs a Rewrite… ASAP
At the end of the day…
Beauty in Black isn’t a bad idea.
It’s a show with potential that’s being held back by:
weak dialogue
flat scenes
missed opportunities
And that’s what makes it frustrating.
Because you can SEE what it could be…
But right now?
It’s giving:
“We tried… but did we really?”
Let’s Talk 👇🏾
Be honest…
Did y’all notice the dialogue too?
Or am I being extra?
And the REAL question:
If YOU were writing this show… what would you change first?! 😭
