I've Written Ebooks, But Where Are the Sales? Making Less Than $2 Is Frustrating!

I've Written Ebooks, But Where Are the Sales? Making Less Than $2 Is Frustrating!

**By Spencer Whitelow**

### The Reality of Being an Independent Ebook Author

Let me tell you something nobody talks about enough when it comes to self-publishing ebooks. Everybody tells you to write a book, publish it on Amazon, and start making money.

But what happens when you do all that work and your earnings are less than $2?

Yes, you read that correctly. **LESS THAN TWO DOLLARS!**

I'm sitting here looking at my ebook sales, wondering where all the readers are. I've spent hours writing, editing, creating book covers, coming up with titles, and publishing my work.

And what do I have to show for it financially? Barely enough money to buy a candy bar!

Now, somebody explain that to me!

### I've Published Books, So Why Aren't People Buying?

I've been writing and publishing ebooks for years. I've created poetry books, inspirational books, relationship advice, entertainment stories, and books about personal experiences.

I have published dozens of ebooks on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

You would think that having so many books available would mean somebody somewhere would be purchasing them regularly.

But that's not necessarily how self-publishing works.

**Writing a book is one thing. Getting somebody to spend money on it is a completely different business.**

And that's the part I'm learning the hard way.

### Selling an Ebook for 99 Cents Isn't Making Me Rich!

Let's talk about these 99-cent ebooks.

Some of my books sell for just $0.99. Depending on Amazon's royalty rules and the marketplace, I may earn approximately $0.35 per sale.

Now, let's do some math.

- Sell 1 ebook: approximately $0.35
- Sell 3 ebooks: approximately $1.05
- Sell 10 ebooks: approximately $3.50
- Sell 100 ebooks: approximately $35
- Sell 1,000 ebooks: approximately $350

Imagine selling 100 books and only making around $35!

At this rate, I'm going to need a whole lot of readers before I start seeing serious money.

I'm not expecting to become a millionaire overnight, but can I at least make enough to buy lunch?

### Social Media Followers Don't Always Become Book Buyers

Here's another frustrating part.

You can post your books on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and X all day long.

People might like your post. Some might leave a comment. Others might even congratulate you on becoming an author.

But congratulations don't pay royalties!

People will scroll past a book promotion in two seconds, then spend 30 minutes arguing about a reality television show.

And yes, I review reality television myself, so I know how much attention that drama gets!

But when I promote an ebook that could entertain, educate, or inspire somebody, suddenly everybody gets quiet.

Where did everybody go?

### Am I Writing Too Many Books Without Marketing Them?

This is something I've started asking myself.

Maybe my problem isn't that I'm writing bad books.

Maybe I'm publishing too many without giving each one enough attention.

I get excited about a new idea. I create a title, write the chapters, design a cover, and publish it.

Then I'm already thinking about the next ebook.

But who is promoting the previous one?

**A book sitting on Amazon without marketing is like opening a store and never telling anybody where it's located.**

I'm beginning to understand that I need to spend more time promoting what I've already written instead of constantly rushing to publish something new.

### Five Things I'm Thinking About Changing

**1. Stop rushing to publish new ebooks.**

I need to focus on getting readers interested in my existing books.

**2. Reconsider my ebook prices.**

Selling everything for $0.99 might not be the best business strategy. I need to research whether some books could reasonably sell for $2.99 or more.

**3. Promote one book at a time.**

Instead of posting ten different books, I could choose one title and promote it consistently for a few weeks.

**4. Use my YouTube channel and blog.**

I already create content. Why not talk about the stories behind my books, read short excerpts, and explain why I wrote them?

**5. Find my actual reading audience.**

Everybody isn't interested in poetry, relationship advice, inspirational stories, or urban fiction. I need to find the people who actually enjoy the kinds of books I write.

### I'm Not Giving Up on Writing!

Here's what I want people to understand.

Making less than $2 from ebook sales is disappointing.

It's frustrating when you put your creativity, time, and energy into something and the financial results don't match the effort.

Sometimes I wonder whether people are even finding my books.

But I also realize that building an audience takes work, patience, experimentation, and consistency.

I'm still proud of being an independent author.

Every book I've published represents an idea I turned into something real.

And even though the money isn't coming in the way I hoped, I'm not ready to throw away my writing dreams.

**I'm 58 years old, and I still have stories to tell. My dreams didn't retire just because my ebook sales are struggling!**

### Final Thoughts: Can Independent Authors Really Make Money?

I believe independent authors can make money, but publishing books alone doesn't guarantee sales.

I'm learning that writing is the creative side of the business, while marketing is what helps people discover the work.

Right now, my ebook earnings might be less than $2, but that doesn't mean my writing journey is over.

It means I need a better strategy.

And trust me, I'm going to keep working on it.

Because one thing about me: **I may get frustrated, but I'm not finished!**

### Let's Talk About It!

Are you an independent author struggling to sell your ebooks?

Have you published books on Amazon KDP but earned very little money?

**I want to hear from you!**

- How many ebooks have you published?
- How much money are you actually making?
- Do you think Amazon KDP is still worth it for beginners?
- What's your biggest challenge: writing, marketing, or finding readers?

**Drop your experience in the comments. Let's have a real conversation about the struggles of self-publishing!**
