I’m on Amazon KDP, I Have 114+ eBooks… and Sometimes I Make $0
(Yes, Let’s Talk About That)
Let me tell you something Amazon KDP gurus on YouTube won’t say out loud.
You can do everything right…
You can have over a hundred eBooks published…
You can be getting organic traffic…
And still open that KDP app like:
“Oh.
So… nothing today.”
Welcome to my KDP life.
I’ve been on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing for years. I’ve published 114+ eBooks across multiple genres—non-fiction, poetry, commentary, self-help, messy thoughts, real talk, passion projects, and “I just needed to get this off my chest” books.
And guess what?
Some months I make nothing.
Some months I make $3.
Some months I make $7.41.
And every once in a while—when the KDP gods feel generous—I make under $10 and stare at the screen like I just won the lottery.
Let’s talk about the real tea. ☕
The Lie: “Just Use Organic Traffic and Forget About It”
They say:
“Upload your books, use organic traffic, and forget about it.”
FORGET ABOUT IT?!
Baby… do you know how hard it is to forget about money you don’t have?
Organic traffic sounds cute in theory. It’s giving:
- “Just plant seeds and walk away”
- “Manifest sales”
- “Let Amazon do the work”
But in reality, organic traffic on KDP means:
- Amazon might show your book
- Or might not
- Depending on mood, algorithm, moon cycles, and vibes
So yes, I get traffic.
Yes, people click my books.
Yes, pages get read.
And still… no money.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of the KDP App ππ
Let me explain the trauma.
You open the KDP app thinking:
“Okay, today might be the day.”
You refresh. Nothing.
You close it. Reopen it. Nothing.
You start questioning:
- “Did I upload the wrong file?”
- “Is Amazon mad at me?”
- “Is my account shadow-banned?”
- “Do people hate reading now?”
Then one random day, you see:
$1.23
And suddenly you’re like:
“IT’S WORKING.”
That $1.23 has you feeling like Oprah:
“You get a book! You get a book! Everybody gets a book!”
Only for the next day to go right back to $0.00.
Very humbling.
Very character-building.
Very disrespectful.
Having 114+ eBooks Doesn’t Mean 114 Sales
Here’s another uncomfortable truth.
More books does not automatically equal more money.
I know people with:
- 5 books making $500/month
- 10 books making $1,000/month
And then there’s me with 114+ books like:
“Hi. It’s me. I’m the problem.”
Why?
Because:
- Some books were passion projects
- Some were experiments
- Some were written fast
- Some were niche-confused
- Some were ahead of their time (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it)
Quantity helps visibility—but strategy helps sales.
The Shady Truth About Amazon KDP
Let’s gossip for a second.
Amazon does not care how hard you worked on your book. Amazon does not care that you stayed up all night editing. Amazon does not care that this book changed your life.
Amazon cares about:
- Keywords
- Click-through rates
- Covers that stop scrolling
- Descriptions that SELL
If your book looks like a diary entry instead of a solution? Amazon will politely ignore it.
So Why Am I Still on KDP?
Good question.
Because even when I make:
- $0
- $3
- $7.89
That money is still:
- Passive
- Mine
- Earned while I was sleeping, eating, or being messy online
And sometimes—just sometimes—a book randomly pops off. No warning. No announcement. Just vibes.
That’s when KDP reminds you:
“I’m toxic… but I have potential.”
Real Advice From Someone Still In It
Let me give you actual advice, not fairy-tale advice.
1. Stop Expecting Every Book to Be a Hit
Some books are:
- Brand builders
- Trust builders
- Entry points
Not everything is meant to pay rent.
2. One Good Book Beats 50 Confused Ones
If I could go back, I’d focus harder on:
- One problem
- One audience
- One clear promise
Instead of throwing everything at Amazon and hoping something sticks.
3. Organic Traffic Works… Slowly
Organic traffic is:
- Long-term
- Boring
- Quiet
If you want faster results, you need:
- Blogs
- Email lists
- YouTube
- Social media chaos
Amazon alone is not enough.
4. Covers Matter More Than Feelings
I don’t care how good the book is. If the cover screams:
“I made this on my phone at 2 a.m.”
People will scroll right past it.
Harsh but true.
5. Some Months Will Hurt Your Feelings
And that’s okay.
You’re not failing. You’re learning. You’re building something invisible before it becomes visible.
The Real Win Nobody Talks About
Here’s the part nobody claps for.
I didn’t quit.
Even when the app said $0. Even when I felt delusional. Even when I questioned my life choices.
I kept publishing. I kept learning. I kept experimenting.
Because one thing about KDP? It rewards consistency, not desperation.
Final Thoughts (Before I Refresh the App Again)
Amazon KDP is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a get-tested-emotionally program.
Some months you win. Some months Amazon humbles you. Some months you stare at $3 like:
“Well… dinner on me.”
But if you’re still showing up? Still writing? Still publishing?
You’re already doing something most people never will.
Now excuse me while I open the KDP app again… Just to check.
Because today might be the day. ππ✨
