Rhonda Ross Is Working for Mama Diana — Backup Singer or Opening Act? ππ€
Chile, when your mama is Diana Ross, there really is no such thing as casually going to work with your mother.
Most of us might help Mama carry in the groceries.
Rhonda Ross? She gets onstage with one of the most famous women in music history. π
And if you’ve been keeping up with Diana Ross and her 2026 performances, you may have noticed something interesting: Rhonda Ross Kendrick has been joining Mama Diana onstage.
But before somebody starts screaming, “Diana Ross got her daughter working as a backup singer!” — hold that microphone.
Because what Rhonda appears to be doing is much more interesting than simply standing behind Diana singing “ooh” and “ahh.”
Rhonda Ross Is Getting Her Own Moment
Rhonda has been appearing during Diana Ross concerts and performing alongside her mother.
One of the sweetest moments has been the two singing “Count on Me” together.
Now THAT is a mother-and-daughter moment.
Imagine being Rhonda.
Your mother walks onto the stage, and the audience immediately loses its mind because this isn't just anybody's mama.
This is DIANA ROSS.
The Supremes.
“Upside Down.”
“I’m Coming Out.”
“Love Hangover.”
“Touch Me in the Morning.”
“Endless Love.”
The hair.
The gowns.
The drama.
The LEGACY.
And now Rhonda gets to stand next to that legacy and create a musical moment of her own.
But here's where things get even more interesting.
Rhonda hasn't only been singing with Diana. She's also reportedly been getting opportunities during the concerts to perform some of her own music.
So calling her simply a “backup singer” doesn't really tell the whole story.
This is giving:
Mama needs to change gowns, so baby, take this microphone and entertain these people until I get back. π
Diana Said Keep It in the Family!
I actually love this arrangement.
Diana Ross could probably have almost anybody perform during her concerts.
But having Rhonda participate adds something personal to the show.
You're not simply watching Diana Ross the superstar.
You're getting a little glimpse of Diana Ross the mother.
And Rhonda isn't some random celebrity child who suddenly woke up yesterday and decided she wanted to sing because Mama had connections.
Rhonda Ross has been performing and making music for years.
She has her own voice.
She has her own style.
She has her own artistic identity.
That distinction matters because being Diana Ross's daughter probably comes with both incredible opportunities AND enormous expectations.
Imagine somebody comparing your voice to Diana Ross every time you open your mouth.
No pressure whatsoever! π
But Let's Talk About the Elephant in the Dressing Room
You already know somebody somewhere is going to say:
“Well, she only got that opportunity because Diana Ross is her mother.”
And my response?
Well…yes. That's her mama!
What exactly is Diana supposed to do?
Put Rhonda through six auditions?
“Thank you for coming in, Miss Ross. Unfortunately, we've decided to go in another direction.”
Girl, bye. π
Families have worked together in entertainment forever.
If you have talented people in your family and everybody gets along, why wouldn't you create together?
The important question is whether Rhonda can actually hold the stage.
And Rhonda isn't being hidden behind the curtain.
She's being given moments where the audience can actually hear and see Rhonda Ross the artist.
That's different from simply singing background vocals all night.
The Costume-Change Job Is Actually Genius
Let's discuss the logistics because Diana Ross is known for a GOWN.
Not a dress.
A GOWN.
There is a difference.
Diana doesn't just change clothes.
She disappears and returns looking like somebody threw glitter, feathers, diamonds and old-school Hollywood glamour into a tornado.
So somebody has to keep the audience entertained while Miss Ross is backstage becoming Diana Ross all over again.
Enter Rhonda.
Rhonda can perform her music.
The audience gets introduced to another artist.
Mama gets enough time to change.
Everybody wins.
That's not backup singing.
That's basically the most glamorous family business imaginable.
Some families own restaurants together.
Some families own construction companies.
The Ross family?
“Baby, hold this concert down while Mama puts on another sequined cape.”
πππ
And I Actually Want MORE
Here's my only complaint.
Give us more Ross family moments!
If Rhonda and Diana are already sharing the stage, I would love to see an entire special built around Diana and her children.
Think about it.
Diana Ross: A Family Celebration.
Diana performs the classics.
Rhonda performs.
Tracee Ellis Ross comes out and gives us comedy, fashion and storytelling.
Evan Ross performs.
Then everybody comes together at the end.
I would watch.
And don't let them bring out some archival footage of The Supremes because then I'm going to need somebody to bring me a chair.
There is something special about seeing musical history continue through generations.
Rhonda Doesn't Need to Be Diana Ross 2.0
This is also important.
Rhonda Ross doesn't need to sound exactly like Diana.
She doesn't need Diana's career.
She doesn't need to recreate The Supremes.
She doesn't need to wear the same gowns.
She doesn't need to become “the next Diana Ross.”
There is already a Diana Ross.
Rhonda should be allowed to be Rhonda.
And appearing with her mother could actually introduce Rhonda's music to people who haven't followed her career.
Some people attending these concerts probably know Diana's entire catalog but haven't listened closely to Rhonda's music.
Now suddenly they're hearing Rhonda perform.
That's exposure.
That's smart.
And yes, it's also a beautiful family moment.
Mama Diana Is Still Working!
Can we also discuss the fact that Diana Ross is STILL out here performing?
Because some of these younger performers complain about doing three shows and need six months of recovery.
Meanwhile Diana said:
Where's my gown? Where's my microphone? What city are we in tonight?
That work ethic comes from another era.
Diana Ross has been performing professionally since the early 1960s.
Think about that.
Decades of touring.
Decades of recording.
Decades of interviews.
Decades of costume changes.
Decades of people screaming your name.
And she is still giving audiences Diana Ross.
That alone deserves respect.
So Is Rhonda Ross Mama's Backup Singer?
Technically, Rhonda may contribute vocals during portions of the show, but based on the performances we've seen, calling her simply Diana Ross's backup singer undersells what's happening.
She's more like a featured performer within her mother's show.
She sings with Diana.
She gets individual stage time.
She performs her own material.
And yes, she conveniently helps keep the party going while Mama handles those legendary costume changes.
Call it opening act.
Call it special guest.
Call it family business.
Just don't act like Rhonda is standing somewhere behind a curtain going:
“Ooooooh Diana!”
π
She's getting her moment too.
Final Thoughts
I love seeing Diana Ross and Rhonda Ross Kendrick performing together because there's something genuinely beautiful about a mother and daughter sharing the stage.
Especially when that mother happens to be one of the biggest icons in American music.
Diana has nothing left to prove.
Rhonda doesn't need to prove she's Diana.
They can simply enjoy making music together.
And if Mama Diana says, “Rhonda, you're coming on tour,” you pack your bags.
Because when Diana Ross calls you to the stage, YOU GO TO THE STAGE.
Now I want to hear from YOU.
Would you pay to see Diana Ross and Rhonda Ross together in concert?
Do you think Rhonda should have an even bigger part of Mama's show?
And would you watch a full Ross Family concert special featuring Diana, Rhonda, Evan and Tracee?
Drop your thoughts in the comments because I KNOW the Diana Ross fans have opinions!
And somebody tell Mama Diana to keep those gowns coming.
Because if there's one thing Miss Ross is NEVER going to do…
it's come out onstage looking regular. π✨
